Hanauma Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island of Oahu. Known for an abundance of marine life including over 400 species of fish and the majestic green sea turtle (honu). This is arguably the best snorkeling spot in the islands.

Notes About Visiting

Make sure you visit the Hanauma Bay website for details. There are small fees associated, and first-timers must watch a 9-minute video.  You can either walk down to the beach or ride the tram for about $1.

The parking lot fills up quickly.  It’s a good idea to go early in the day or book a shuttle.  If you don’t make it there before the parking lot closes, you can always park along the main road and enjoy the scenic walk.  However, this option is not preferred.

Hanauma Bay is CLOSED on Tuesdays.

Underwater View

Below is a 360 degree underwater view made available through the Street View feature of Google Maps. Google partnered with The Catlin Seaview Survey, a major scientific study of the world’s reefs, to make get these amazing images. The Catlin Seaview Survey used a specially designed underwater camera, the SVII, to capture these photos.

If you place the mouse pointer on top of the image, click and hold you can drag the view around to see 360 degrees. (Tip: Click the top left corner of the image to view in full screen!)
