Frequently Asked Questions About Travel to Hawaiʻi

When is the best time to visit Hawaiʻi?
The best time to visit Hawaiʻi is April to June and September to mid-December. These months offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds and lower prices. However, Hawaiʻi is a year-round destination, so it really depends on your preferences. Winter (December–March) is great for whale watching and surfing big waves, but also the busiest and most expensive.
What are the top Hawaiian islands to visit?
Each island has its own personality. The most popular ones are: Oʻahu – Great for first-timers, culture, history and nightlife. Home to the world famous Waikīkī Beach. Maui – Known for luxury resorts, beaches and the scenic Road to Hāna. Hawaiʻi Island (Big Island) – Active volcanoes, stargazing and diverse climates. Kauaʻi – Ideal for nature lovers and hiking, with lush rainforests and dramatic cliffs. Lānaʻi – Less touristy, great for quiet getaways. Molokaʻi – Not promoted for tourism.
What should I pack for a trip to Hawaiʻi?
Pack light and breathable clothing. Essentials include: Swimsuits & beachwear Light layers (it can get cool in higher elevations) Sunscreen (reef-safe only) Sunglasses & hat Comfortable sandals and hiking shoes Reusable water bottle Rain jacket (especially for Kauaʻi or Hilo) Don’t forget your camera and a sense of adventure!
Is Hawaiʻi a good place to learn how to surf?
Yes! Hawaiʻi has plenty of beginner-friendly surf spots and surf schools. Waikīkī Beach on Oʻahu is one of the best places to learn, thanks to its gentle, consistent waves and experienced instructors. Just be sure to check local conditions and always respect the ocean.
How do I get around between islands?
To travel between islands, you’ll need to fly. Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest and other local carriers offer short inter-island flights (usually 30–45 minutes). There are currently no regular passenger ferries between most islands, except between Maui and Lānaʻi.
Are there any cultural etiquette tips I should know?
Yes. Hawaiʻi has a rich culture and it's important to be respectful: Learn and use basic Hawaiian words, like aloha (hello/goodbye/love) and mahalo (thank you). Remove shoes before entering someone’s home. Respect sacred sites (heiau) and never take lava rocks or sand. Don’t touch wildlife (including sea turtles and monk seals—it’s illegal). Drive with aloha and do not honk—be patient and courteous on the roads. Most of all, embrace the aloha spirit—be kind, respectful and open-hearted.
