MOLOKAʻI — ʻĀINA MOMONA

Can I Visit Molokaʻi?

Although Molokaʻi receives some visitors each year, tourism is not promoted for this Hawaiian Island. Here, residents enjoy a traditional Hawaiian way of life, living in harmony with the land and caring for the ocean and each other. Visitors to Molokaʻi should be invited by ʻohana or visiting for a specific community-based purpose.

Kalaupapa Tours on Moloka'i

In 1866, the Hawaiian monarchy’s Board of Health turned Kalaupapa and Kalawao Peninsula into a place of exile. Anyone with the contagious Hansen’s Disease — a disease highly feared and misunderstood at the time — was ripped away from their families and sent to this 10,725-acre settlement with a life sentence. Today, visitors can tour this area with someone who lived the experience.
