Bohemoth combat helicopter shells long since retired, guns once resounding in rapid fire now silent witnesses to war, and rust-tinged tanks long ago having carried their last passengers safely through zones of attack, all these relics, and more, await those who visit the island of Oahu’s U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii. With such real life remnants flanking one on all sides, it is easy to imagine just what it felt like to be amid the military action. The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii offers a sober reminder of just how much we owe to our servicemen and women who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.
Pride, Honor, Courage, Valor
The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii is housed at Battery Randolph, a gargantuan reinforced concrete structure (its roofs a massive 12 feet in thickness) that was built circa 1911 in order to provide protection and safe haven against any unknown invaders who may threaten. The destination now exists as the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii, “living on” to bear witness of what happened here, to tell the tale of Hawaii’s military past—a history steeped in pride, honor, courage, and valor.
Detailed and Authentic Exhibits
With detailed and authentic exhibits, spanning from ancient times all the way to the Gulf War and the War in Iraq, the museum provides an inside view via myriad photographs, visuals, and even sound effects (be forewarned that some of these may be considered graphic due to wartime subject matter) of each significant military encounter and pays tribute to those of Hawaii who took part in each. Acting as a roadmap, or beautiful quilt, weaving the story of Hawaii’s military history in bold, vivid strokes, the museum exists to share the sacrifice of service, so that we may never forget.
