21 Degrees Estate
21 Degrees Estate is a family-owned boutique cacao farm and is located in Kahalu‘u, on the beautiful windward side of O‘ahu. This area was known to Native Hawaiians as the “breadbasket of Oahu” with its rich and fertile lands, from the serene waters of Kaneohe Bay and rising to the breathtaking heights of the Ko’olau Mountains. 21 Degrees Estate strives to be “the most charming cacao farm in Hawaii,” with its spectacular vista and showcasing not only hundreds of cacao trees but also numerous examples of Hawaii’s natural beauty in native trees and tropical flowers.
We produce a premium cacao used by artisanal chocolate makers to make a superior single-origin estate 60, 70 & 80% cacao chocolate that is smooth and silky in texture and rich in flavor.
Hawaii is the only state where the chocolate tree grows, and the best place to experience a live chocolate tree orchard on Oʻahu is 21 Degrees Estate, a veteran-owned and family operated working farm! You’re invited to enjoy chocolate from “Bean to Bar,” an educational guided tour of everything there is to know about chocolate, including growing cacao trees, harvesting and post-harvest processing of cacao beans, all the way to an extensive tasting of the finished product everyone loves.
Our O‘ahu chocolate tour is family-friendly: Kids 5 and under attend free and 6-12 only $10 with an accompanying adult, and with so much to see, smell, learn about and taste, the Farm’s wide-open spaces make this a wonderful event even for very small children. They will also enjoy cuddling our mini-goats and bunnies.
In addition to all the tropical fruit and chocolate we taste, the tour is a visual feast as well, so be sure to bring your camera to admire dozens of exotic tropical plants such as our rare red and white torch gingers, parrot’s beak and lobster claw heliconia. Along the way, your guides will share our farm’s vision for creating sustainable diversified agriculture on Oʻahu and share the long agricultural history of this land to include many of the original “canoe crops” brought to Hawaii by the earliest voyagers.
Our 2-2.5 hour guided tour is especially fun for fruit and flower lovers as we stroll through the farm, stopping to taste the tropical fruits that are in season. Depending on the month, these may include lychee, ulu, apple banana, ice cream banana, coconut, starfruit, olena (turmeric), mountain apple, papaya, mango, avocado and more.
You’ll also taste our Farm’s acclaimed “Kahalu`u Gold,” an exquisite light floral honey from the farm’s 12 hives, an elixir light golden in color with delicate floral notes and a hint of citrus.
When we reach the cacao orchard, we cut open a ripe chocolate pod and pass it around for everyone to sample. We then move into our chocolate tasting tent, where you sit comfortably in the shade while we explain the post-harvest processing of cacao. As you may know, dark chocolate is actually a health food, and your guides explain its antioxidant and other health benefits, as well as discuss how chocolate is made.
Best of all, you’ll enjoy an extensive dark chocolate tasting with the delicious single-origin estate chocolate grown on our farm, compared with examples from all over the world that highlight the distinctive flavors found in craft chocolate. Similar to a wine tasting, we teach you how to taste chocolate like a connoisseur.
Adults are $45/adult; teens 13-17 are $20/person, kids 6-12 are $10 and kids 5 and under are free!
