Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar
Benvenuto! Welcome to Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar created by famed restaurateur Wolfgang Zwiener and his son, Peter Zwiener. Il Lupino serves delicious, authentic Italian cuisine in a relaxing, yet sophisticated, environment, featuring indoor and lanai bar and dining, an open kitchen, and a salumeria, or Italian deli.
The Story Behind Il Lupino
Growing up and traveling through Europe, Wolfgang’s Zwiener found his passion for true Italian cusine. While in Italy, the locals would affectionately call him “Il Lupino” derived from the “Wolf” of his name. During that time period, it became his dream to open an Italian restaurant that would offer all his favorite dishes. That dream came to fruition in December 2010, when Wolfgang proudly opened his flagship Il Lupino Trattoria and Wine Bar at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Centre in the heart of Waikiki. They hope you will enjoy the delicious Italian food created with love, dedication and passion. You might even meet Wolfgang himself in the restaurant while you are visiting.
A Taste of Italy in Paradise
Since it’s opening, Il Lupino has garnered rave reviews and quickly become a favorite of kama‘aina (locals) and malihini (visitors), alike. Described as somewhere in between casual and fine dining, this charming restaurant is simple yet sophisticated, and very relaxing — exactly the type of place you would want to dine at in paradise.
“Wolfgang and Peter Zwiener wanted to combine the informality of a traditional trattoria with a touch of fine dining,” Il Lupino representative Mona Wood explains. “The restaurant has a sophisticated, yet comfortable, atmosphere, with options to dine on our lanai or indoors. We are located at the heart of Royal Hawaiian Center in the Royal Grove, so diners on the lanai have a view of the gardens, pond, and part of the historical Royal Hawaiian Hotel.”
Andiamo a mangiare! (Let’s eat!)
Our Chefs will accommodate all palettes. Our pasta is prepared daily fresh and all our product comes directly from the Island. “Whenever possible, we try to source our greens and produce locally,” says executive chef James Donahue.
Lustful creations incorporating the fresh local seasonal produce, imported Italian cheeses, hand-cut meats and a variety of seafood accented with fine Italian olive oils and, featuring hand-made pastas. “We bring in the aged meats and cheeses from Italy, and it’s sliced fresh to order.. Also, we bought a special, modern pizza oven from Italy for our pizza. And our pastas are hand-made in-house,” says general manger Heela Mottus.
“Making our own pasta gives us more control and freedom to perfect the flavor and texture, and the pasta cooks much faster,” add chef Donahue.
One of the the most popular dishes is the Salumeria sampler. The Salumeria sampler includes Prosciutto Di Parma (dry-cured ham from Emilia-Romagna, Italy), Tallegio (semi-soft, smear-ripened cow milk cheese from Milan, Italy) and Salami Toscana (Tuscan pork salami seasoned with garlic and wine).
