Raft the Hana Coast

By Hawaii.com Team

An ocean rafting trip in waters off the celebrated Hana coast brings new meaning to a Maui boat cruise. Yes, there are plenty of other boat tours but none of them explore the remote waters off the island’s east side.

Hana Bay Charters has launched a new eco-adventure that makes it possible to snorkel, whale watch and sightsee in these little traveled waters. On a typical snorkel trip, expect to travel north towards Keanae Peninsula or south towards Kipahulu and Oheo Gulch. Ocean conditions set the course, but either way the view will be magnificent.

Think secluded bays, waterfalls caressing the cliffs as they cascade towards the ocean, and an abundance of marine life including several species of tropical reef fish, green sea turtles, manta rays and pods of spinner and Pacific bottlenose dolphins.

During the winter humpback whale season, Hana Bay Charters will be tracking these 40-ton creatures in “Ihe Kai,” a 36-foot vessel made for speed and comfort. There’s a good chance it’ll be just you and the whales, as upclose and personal as you can get without breaking any laws.

Aboard the vessel, passengers will hear legends about the Hana area and learn about the need to protect and preserve the ocean environment. Tours depart four times a day from Hana Bay Wharf.
