Hawaii Walking Tours

Manoa Falls

Manoa Falls

Most often, when one thinks of taking a lovely stroll in the land of aloha, the pictures in their minds portray more sparkling white sand beaches and billowing waves than city scenes. However, these unique and informative walking tours found throughout the islands of Hawaiʻi will leave you with happy feet—and hearts.

Honolulu Walking Tours

On Oʻahu, walks around the capitol area will take you through the monarchy era of Hawaiʻi, a historically rich thoroughfare of which the main highlight is ʻIolani Palace, a beautifully restored museum that was once home to Hawaiʻi’s royalty. Just across the street from ʻIolani Palace is Aliʻiolani Hale, where the iconic King Kamehameha statue graces the lush front lawn. Other nearby points of interest are the Mission Houses and Kawaiahaʻo Church (also known as “the Westminister Abbey of the Pacific”).

Chinatown offers a much more eclectic trek of tastes. Take in the sights of turn-of-the-century architecture—including intriguing antique government locales like its Oʻahu Railway and Land Terminal, opened all the way back in 1927, or the original 1896 Bishop Estate Building on Merchant Street—that have remained largely unchanged in over 100 years. Shop at the bustling Oahu Market, which opened in 1904. And end your walking tour with even more inspiration, amid the natural beauty of the area’s Foster Botanical Garden.

Oʻahu’s downtown will also delight. Stop at any of its many historical sites—such as the iconic Aloha Tower at Pier 9, or the famed Hawai’i Theatre with its stunning art deco decor—and don’t forget to take a gander at the gorgeous Romanesque style of Our Lady of Peace Cathedral, while here!

Waikiki Walking Tours

Wander over to Waikiki, and warm yourself on the lush lawn of popular Kapiʻolani Park, before heading to wriggle your toes in the sands and surf of Waikiki Beach. En route, stop by the famed Duke Kahanamoku statue and the Healing Stones of Kapaemahu, or visit surf spot Kapahulu groin. End your time here with a peaceful meander along the Ala Wai canal that ribbons its way through the neighborhood.

Kauaʻi Walking Tours

A trio of pedestrian-friendly treks on Kauaʻi make this island a prime walking tour destination as well. In particular, the Mahaʻulepu Coastal Trail—perhaps the last stretch of accessible coastline on the island’s south shore yet to be developed—is a lovely hike that winds its way along the coast, from the south east corner of Shipwreck Beach Keonela Bay. A guided walking tour of Kapaʻa, sponsored officially by the Kauaʻi Historical Society, runs about 1.5 hours in length and spans a distance of about a mile of the north end of old Kapaʻa town—all the while, guests being regaled with fascinating facts and tales of King David Kalakaua, the sugar plantations, the Hawaiian Canneries and more. Also not to be missed is a historic Waimea walking tour, start at the Waimea Visitor Center and enjoy 2.5 hours of literally traveling through time to the season when Captain Cook first arrived on the shores of Kauaʻi. Also learn about the island missionaries, and more.

Maui Walking Tours

Make more walking tour memories on Maui, wandering your way around historic Lahaina’s scenic and charming Front Street, packed with a plethora of nook-and-cranny shops, restaurants, cafes and galleries galore!

Big Island Walking Tours

Or choose to bebop on over to the Big Island, where a walk along Ala Kahakai (translated in Hawaiian as ‘Trail by the Shoreline’) will offer you a stunning hike along the coastline where ancient Hawaiians also trod. The nearly 175-mile trail stretches from the Big Island’s northernmost tip to South Point, and then returns north via the Puna District. Or opt for a historic Kailua Town trek, winding your way through this village that begins on Aliʻi Drive and encompasses such historical landmarks as Hawaiʻi’s first Christian church (Mokuaikaua), Kamakahonu, Kailua Pier, and Huliheʻe Palace.
