Golfing on Maui

The game of golf came to Maui relatively late, when the Maui Country Club opened in 1925 in Spreckelsville. The island has done its best to make up for its slow start, now hosting fantastic courses, award-winning designs and championship tournaments galore.

The PGA Tournament of Champions, Kapalua, Maui

Perhaps the most well known golf event on Maui is the annual Tournament of Champions held annually in world-class Kapalua. Every January, top PGA golfers head to the Valley Isle to tee it up on the greens of Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course.

Best Golf Courses on Maui

With so many stellar courses on Maui, it’s difficult to pinpoint “the best.” That being said, Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course continues to be rated among the best in all of Hawaii. Kapalua Golf’s Bay Course is not a bad alternative. Other standout Maui golf courses include King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku, Wailea Golf Club, particularly the Emerald course, and the Kaanapali Golf Courses. Expect green fees of over $200 for these premium courses. Read more

Maui Golf Deals

However, not every Maui golf course is so taxing on the wallet. There are many golf courses where you can play for under $100: Dunes at Maui Lani, Maui Nui Golf Club, Kahili Golf Course, and Pukalani Country Club. The cheapest golf course on Maui is the municipal Waiehu Golf Course where green fees don’t go over $55 and are often much less. Of course you can always look for “twilight” rates at the premium courses. Twilight rates start anywhere 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. And, finally, as a rule of thumb, weekday rates are less than weekend and holiday rates.

If you’re up for a bit of adventure, you can take the ferry across the channel to the island of Lanai. There is a completely free 9-hole course that was built for the locals when Lanai was a pineapple plantation. The Cavendish Golf Course in Lanai City has no staff or clubhouse, but it’s a free 9-hole decently maintained course open to the public.

Best Play for Your Money

If you’re looking to get the best play for your money on Maui, visit the Kahili Golf Course in Wailuku. It’s a public course that was recently rated top 10 by Golf Advisor readers. Coming in at number nine for 2016, just under famed Mauna Kea Golf Course on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kahili Golf Course green fees still come in under $100.
