Maui is a long way from San Francisco, even farther from New York. But it has a surprising array of top-drawer restaurants, clubs, theaters, resort nightspots and good entertainment. Lahaina takes the prize for late night partying and choice of venues, but there are hip spots all over the island, even up the hill in Makawao. Check out Casanova Italian Restaurant & Deli, named the best food and entertainment combo in Maui by Zagat’s Restaurant Survey. After hours, the sprawling dining area is converted into one of Maui’s hottest nightclubs.

Paradice Bluz, in Lahaina, has a 460-square-foot dance floor and music every night until 2 a.m. You can find live jazz at Pacific ‘o and a good time at places like Bubba Gump, Kimo’s, Moose McGillycuddy’s, Rusty Harpoon, Maui Brews and Pioneer Inn. In Kaʻanapali, Hula Grill, on the beach at Whalers Village, is a good bet.

Nightspots to check out in South Maui include Hapa’s Brew Haus & Restaurant in Kihei and Mulligan’s on the Blue, which features dinner theater starring top Hawaiian entertainers.

You can book a sunset dinner cruise or a show if you’re not in the mood for clubbing. Maui Theatre in Lahaina is home to ʻUlalena, one of the best long-standing live shows in Hawaii. Warren & Annabelle’s, also in Lahaina, offers another venue for pure entertainment. Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului has something going most of the time. And most resort hotels have a full schedule of evening entertainment ranging from jazz to big band, from mellow Hawaiian groups to piano.

When all is said and done, though, it’s hard to beat a Maui sunset, dinner under the stars and a hug on the beach under a hula moon.
