Sony Open in Hawaii
January 8, 2018 - January 14, 2018
Each January the Sony Open in Hawaii attracts 144 of the world’s greatest golf professionals to the Waialae Country Club on the island of Oahu. The event is the largest charity golf event in Hawaii and has raised over $15 million dollars for the local not-for-profits since 1999. With a significant start of generating $256,000 for 43 charities in 1999, tournament charity proceeds now surpass the $1 million mark annually benefiting more than 150 not-for-profit organizations.
In 2015, host site Waialae Country Club celebrated fifty years of hosting the PGA TOUR. The Hawaiian Open started in 1965, and the tournament has been played every year with the exception of 1970, when a schedule change moved it from fall to winter. In 1999, it became the Sony Open in Hawaii. Sony Corporation extended its commitment to sponsor the tournament through 2018 – the 20th anniversary of title sponsor entitlement of the tournament.
Global impact of the event reaches over 560 million homes in some 220 countries via multiple national and international broadcast networks, and contributes an estimated $100 million in marketing and economic impact to Hawaii. One of the most international events on the PGA TOUR schedule, the Sony Open showcases international golf talent and camaraderie against the backdrop of Hawaii’s natural beauty to the world.
