2018 Hawaii Island Festival Of Birds
September 14, 2018 - September 17, 2018| $10
The Third Annual Hawaii Island Festival of Birds will take place September 14 through 17 and will once again be headquartered at Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay.
This year’s theme, “Back from the Brink: Hawaii’s Battle Against Extinction,” will showcase the herculean ongoing efforts to save the 50th State’s rarest bird species.
Saturday, September 15th will begin with a Community Bird Fair with feature speakers who are on the frontline of saving Hawaii’s avifauna. Special guest speaker Tim Appleton, founder of the world famous British Birdfair, will join a panel discussion on nene, Hawaii’s endangered state bird. Appleton, who worked with Sir Peter Scott at The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in the United Kingdom, will discuss the trust’s work in the UK in the 1950’s with captive breeding, which was critical to saving the nene.
Other festival highlights include a film festival, birding excursions on land and sea, talk story time and fellowship with Hawaii Island naturalists and bird experts and two evening events, Birds, Binos, and Brews at Sheraton Kona, and a Pau Hana Celebration BBQ at Waikii Ranch.
