Ballet Hawaii Presents: L.A. Dance Project Performance
March 17, 2019 @ 5:30 am - 8:30 am| $30 – $75
Ballet Hawaii announces the Honolulu premiere of L.A. Dance Project (LADP), a vibrant and unique contemporary dance company from Los Angeles that is quickly becoming one of the worlds’ most recognized performing arts brands thanks to the vision of Artistic Director Benjamin Millepied.
Comprising exceptional solo dancers, the company is based in LA’s Arts District and tours internationally. The exhilarating program, presented for one night only on Saturday, March 16 at Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall, features a range of repertory including Bach Studies and Orpheus Highway by Benjamin Millepied as well as Duets by Martha Graham.
“LADP founder and choreographer Benjamin Millepied is a world-class choreographer, filmmaker and former dancer with New York City Ballet. His choreography is featured in Darren Aronofsky’s award-winning film Black Swan, in which he also starred,” said John Parkinson, Ballet Hawaii’s executive director. “Bringing a world-class production of this quality wouldn’t be possible without the support of our sponsors, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.”
“LADP combines modern American dance and a creative urgency deeply committed to our time,” noted Ballet Hawaii Artistic Director Pamela Taylor Tongg. “Their Honolulu program will be an exciting mix of dances. Orpheus Highway by Millepied is a sneaker ballet ((how about: a ballet performed in sneakers)) in the tradition of Jerome Robbins, who was a mentor to Benjamin Millepied. The Martha Graham duets will be of historical significance, and Millepied’s Bach Studies (Part 1) will showcase his contemporary dance creativity.”
