The story of Genki Sushi began with the vision of a 24-year old Japanese sushi chief, Fumio Saito. In December 1968, Saito made his dream of creating a modern sushi restaurant a reality. He created the concept of “kaiten sushi” (literally translated as “revolving”) and pioneered the use of a revolving conveyor belt to serve sushi, combining serving traditional sushi with modern technology.
The new concept caught on fast in Japan. The success of kaiten sushi saw the opening of outlets in the prefecture of Tochigi in the Kanto region and in a town named Utsunomiya.
In 1990, Genki Sushi Co. LTD was established. With its dedication to freshness, the company quickly gained public support and successfully expanded further throughout Japan.
As a result, Genki Sushi also expanded globally. In Hawaii, we are proud to offer a product that is synonymous with Japan’s unique culture and the principle of “customer comes first”. Nine locations across Oahu allow for diners to conveniently enjoy a variety of sushi and Japanese favorites such as nigiri style, gukan style and traditional sushi rolls. All plates are color coded and priced accordingly to provide ultimate satisfaction and affordable prices.
The Ala Moana Center and Waikele restaurants are the first US locations to introduce the “Bullet Express” system that has already gained popularity in Japan. This allows customers to instantly order their favorite sushi on a wireless touch-screen panel and receive their orders via the speedy double rail system within minutes.
However, the face-to-face experience is not lost as servers are still available to assist diners in person. Genki Sushi strives to spread this unique “customer first” dining experience to the world and to never stop improving and upgrading their skills.
