There aren’t very many restaurants in Kihei where you can see the ocean from your table.

Most are either located inside strip malls or have views of the parking lot asphalt, but one exception is Moose McGillycuddy’s — a Kihei staple that’s been feeding visitors since 2006.

The restaurant is just steps from Kamaole II beach, and you can even spot breaching whales in winter from your table or seat at the bar.

Catch the Game

It’s also a spot to catch the big game, considering the thirty, high-def TVs show an NFL package, college sports — even professional surf contests.

Sometimes visitors to Maui are surprised that their favorite team is scheduled for kickoff at 8 or 9 a.m., but luckily “Moose’s,” as it’s know to locals, not only opens at 7:30 a.m. but is known for their filling breakfast specials where eggs benedict and house-made fried rice go great with a Bloody Mary.

Walking Distance

It’s also one of the best restaurants in Kihei for visitors staying in nearby condos who don’t have a car, are exploring on foot or simply don’t feel like driving. It’s an easy stroll from south Kihei condos, and the prices are far more affordable than what you’ll find in Wailea resort.

Best Margaritas on Maui

It’s sister restaurant, Fred’s Mexican Cafe, is located directly downstairs and serves one of the best margaritas on Maui — thanks to a custom sour mix that’s blended specifically for Fred’s restaurants, which are also in California.

That West Coast taste is baked into the menu, as the “San Diego Mexican” flavor bursts through burritos that are heavy on chicken, steak and ranchero suiza sauce. Best of all, it’s one of the few Mexican restaurants on Maui that still starts you off with chips and salsa that’s completely free of charge.

Open, Breezy and Family-Friendly

And even though Moose McGillycuddy’s and Fred’s are both popular bars, the atmosphere is open, breezy and family-friendly, and they both make filling, affordable stops for the family that’s worked up an appetite splashing in the waves that are right across the street.

If you visit on Tuesday there are discounted tacos, there’s festive bingo on Mondays and you’ll find their famous fish and chips are served every night of the week.
