Prior to becoming a popular recreational activity, ziplining was often used for practical reasons. In the 1970’s, wildlife biologists built ziplines to study wildlife in the rainforests of Costa Rica. Upon completion of their research, the ziplines were converted into a recreational activity for visitors. Ziplining soared in popularity as a way to explore the rainforest with little or no impact on the environment. Ziplining tours gradually became popular in other areas of the world, including the Hawaiian Islands.
