There are lots of ways to see Kauai's beautiful back country. One of the best is on horseback. Two North Shore stables offer rides meandering through glorious scenic vistas on secure mounts that know their way along the trail.

Silver Falls Ranch is located near Kilauea, an old plantation town that is home to the Kilauea Point Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge. Here small groups of horseback riders enjoy guided trail rides through the Kalihiwai interior and along Kamo'okoa Ridge on Kauai's north shore. Silver Falls Ranch, open seven days a week, offers many good mounts that are well suited to first time, beginner or advanced riders.

Almost two hours into the saddle, participants will refresh, relax and swim at a natural mountain pool (no hiking necessary). A lovely waterfall sparkling silver in the sunlight provides a relaxing tropical background to enjoy a Teriyaki-local style (or vegetarian by request) picnic, which is served beneath a palm-thatched hut. Private rides tailored to meet individual riding desires are available. First time riders will receive more one-on-one assistance.

Princeville Ranch dates back to an era before the great western cattle drives, even before the annexation of California and the Southwestern Territories. Princeville Ranch Stables, a family owned and operated company, has been in operation on the ranch for 20 years. The stables offer group rides ranging from 1 1/2 to 4 hours in duration.

Princeville Ranch trail rides provide the perfect island setting for a picnic and swim at the base of a waterfall. The trail meanders along the bluffs of Anini Beach and down toward the beach where you'll tie off your horse and take a short stroll to the beach. Or if it's adventure you want, sign up for a cattle drive.

Customized private rides and individual lessons are available. Princeville Ranch Stables is located on Kuhio Highway just minutes east of the entrance to Princeville Resort. Reservations are necessary.
