Hanging in the hazy distance off the west coast of Kauai is the island of Ni'ihau. Long called the forbidden island, it's privately owned and off limits to most outsiders. But you can sail along its secluded coast aboard a sailing catamaran. This trip is generally six to seven hours long, with most providers departing from Port Allen in the early morning.

Anchored off the forbidden island, you can snorkel, scuba dive, slip into the ocean down the vessel's water slide, or just relax and enjoy the scenery with a mai tai close by. The catamaran's observation deck affords spectacular views of majestic sea cliffs, lush waterfalls and the mysterious Na Pali sea caves. In the winter, you're likely to catch humpback whales putting on a show. Monk seals, turtles and schools of exotic fish may also appear. A small meal and beverages are usually part of the package.
