3rd Annual Garden Island Range & Food Festival
By Caroline Wright
As “Kauai's Premier Locavore Event,” the 3rd Annual Garden Island Range & Food Festival is filled with delectable excitement and surprises.
Even the participating chefs don’t know what to
expect, because the ingredients they’ll be using are revealed a few days before the event, “Iron Chef” style. Chefs then must prepare an original recipe with a serving size of 300, for public sampling. The only thing you can count on for sure is that everything will be locally grown and raised, nutritious, and simply delicious.Your palate will quickly confirm that the event’s call to action--“Come and Taste the Difference”—is a promise that delivers the goods. With island-raised lamb, pork, and beef provided by local ranchers, and an amazingly varied selection of fresh fruit and vegetables provided by local farmers, you’ll taste the best of the best gardens on the Garden Isle, prepared by the most talented local chefs and served in one of the most convivial settings on Kauai.
Modeled after the Big Island’s annual Taste of the Hawaiian Range and produced by the Kauai Agricultural Initiative, this all-volunteer event was created to encourage an increase in locally grown food, raise awareness of sustainability and green issues, and benefit the growth of the food industry on Kauai. It’s completely family-friendly, so bring the kids! Promoters have made it easy to attend on a budget: half-price for kids and free for children under five. Get your tickets early at the event website (www.kauaifoodfestival.com) or from one of the local sales outlets; supplies are very limited.
You’ll want to come early and stay late to enjoy the many delights that Kilohana Plantation has to offer. You can hike in the rainforest or through an orchard filled with exotic trees, ride the plantation train, see pigs, goats, sheep, cattle and horses, inspect and sample the huge variety of fruits and vegetables that are grown here, find gifts and treasures to take home from the many small shops and boutiques in the mansion, visit the Koloa Rum tasting room and company store, or even enjoy a Hawaiian luau! Don’t miss this place; it’s truly one of the jewels in the crown of the Garden Isle.
