Farmers Markets
Fill a basket with a colorful array of fruits and vegetables, or design your own bouquet of exotic flowers at one of the many farmers markets on this island of plenty.
The best of the Big Island is available at the colorful open-air farmers markets in Hilo, Captain
Cook, Kailua-Kona, Keauhou, Oceanview, Pahoa, Volcano and Waimea. Here you'll find homegrown, homemade produce at bargain prices. On various days, vendors from all over the Big Island gather in their stalls with fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers, cakes, cookies and preserves, ceramics, photographs and paintings.Look for local favorites like Ka’u oranges. The color is kind of off-orange and mottled but they’re extraordinarily sweet and juicy. Puna papayas, another great find, don’t travel well and are best eaten as soon as possible. Mangoes, the king of fruits, are seasonal and usually found on the drier west side of the island. If you like bananas, check out apple bananas, a local favorite with a subtle apple-like flavor. You can also expect to find avocados, sugarloaf pineapples, Hilo lychees, Waimea strawberries, starfruit, Hawaiian candy, sugarcane, guavas, lilikoi (passionfruit), mountain apples and coconuts.
The fresh flower selection is a delight. Orchids come in every shape, color and size, as do anthuriums, heliconia and protea, all of which have staying power. The tuberose, plumeria, gardenia, pikake and gingers not only are beautiful but their scent is intoxicating.
