James Campbell Wildlife Refuge

The premiere birdwatching site along the Kahuku shoreline, on the northeastern side of the island (coming from Haleiwa, located just past Turtle Bay). During the winter months, endangered Hawaiian stilt, coot, moorhen and duck, as well as migratory birds, come to nest. Established in 1976, the refuge sits on 164 acres leased from the James Campbell estate. Open from the third Saturday in October through the third Saturday in February. Tours are offered on Thursdays and Saturdays. Information: 637-6330.
