The Contemporary Museum

Honolulu is home to The Contemporary Museum, Hawaii's only museum solely dedicated to contemporary art. The museum has two distinct locations. One location is at the Cooke-Spalding estate in the Makiki Heights residential area. The other location can be found in downtown Honolulu at the First Hawaiian Center. What makes the Contemporary Museum unique is the opportunity to interact with artists while viewing the artwork. Artists of Hawaii have authored about a third of all the works in the museum's collection, and the museum hosts special events when the artists and patrons can discuss the pieces on display.

The Makiki Heights location features five exhibit galleries that showcase the contemporary artistic creations of both emerging and established artists. Included are the works of Andy Warhol, Peter Voulkos and Kenneth Price, to name a few. Admission into this location includes an all day pass. At the downtown location, admission is free and the exhibits are open to the public.

If you're interested in seeing some breathtaking examples of nature as art, be sure to take a stroll through the Nu'umealani (heavenly terraces), also known as The Contemporary Museum Gardens. This lush, peaceful environment was created on the five-acre Cooke-Spalding estate as a place for meditation. Visitors can enjoy dramatic views of Diamond Head in the distance, while being up close to flowering trees and exotic tropical plants. Tours are available, but only when a request is made in advance.
