Honolulu Academy of the Arts

The Honolulu Academy of the Arts opened its doors on April 8, 1927 and has been a haven for artists in the Islands since. Located at 900 South Beretania Street, the expansive facility includes a nationally recognized museum, the Linekona Art Center, Doris Duke Theatre, Robert Allerton Library, an Asian Conservation, and the historic architectural point of interest, Shangri La.

At the Academy there is no shortage of the arts to absorb and enjoy. The calendar of events is typically filled with activities for all ages. Exhibitions at the museum change and rotate every few months. In addition, the museum's own diverse, international collection has grown to over 50,000 pieces of art. Of particular interest are the Hawaii and Hawaiiana collections, which showcase both historical and contemporary from artists whose works have been created in the state. These works of art serve as a "pictorial record of Hawaii" and, as a whole, reveal a fascinating portrait of the Hawaiian Islands over time. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the entire collection that are held daily and free with a paid admission.

For a more animated experience visitors are sure to enjoy the films and performances at Doris Duke Theatre. Live classical performances and Broadway favorites are brought to life on stage, while everything from international art house films to locally made movies light up the silver screen.

If you're planning to stay in the area for lunch, The Pavilion Cafe can be found amidst the gardens and waterfalls of the Academy. The ambience, convenient location, and contemporary menu make it a hotspot from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seating is limited and often fills up. For that reason, reservations are highly recommended.
