Pedal the Roads or Trails

Travelers who would rather pedal than drive will soon discover that Oahu has miles of paved routes for the biking enthusiast. One favorite is Oahu's scenic coastline heading east from Waikiki. Head out on a scenic ride past Kapi'olani Park around the famous Le'ahi Crater (Diamond Head) and then down Kalaniana'ole Highway toward Hanauma Bay.

For an up-close look at some backcountry beauty, borrow or rent a mountain bike and tackle Oahu's trails. We recommend these scenic routes:

Ka'ena Point State Park: Around the northwestern point of Oahu runs a rough dirt road linking the island's north and west shores. The sand dunes out on the point shelter federally protected plants and birds, so keep in mind that bikes are allowed only on the main trail. The trail, five miles one way, is fairly flat and suitable for beginning to advanced riders. Hot, dry area with little shade. No drinking water. Take Farrington Highway west to Mokule'ia, pass Dillingham Airfield, and park at the end of the paved road.

Access Road to Peacock Flats: This is a paved, but challenging, incline. At the top, you'll be delighted with the views of the north shore. 3.8 miles each way, good for beginning to advanced riders. Go two miles west past Waialua High School on Farrington Highway, and turn left right before the coconut tree farm

Makapu'u Lighthouse Road: A paved by challenging incline to the top of Makapu'u Point. Excellent views; whales visible December through February. 1.5 miles round trip, good for beginning to advanced riders. Go east past Sandy Beach Park on Kalaniana'ole Highway. Park along the road just beyond the Hawaii Kai golf course.

Maunawili Trail: This 10-mile trail (one way) winds from the upper Pali down to the flats in Waimanalo. Good only for intermediate to advanced riders. Dangerous when wet! Trail head is located at the first scenic lookout on the right-hand side as you descend the Pali Highway toward Kailua.
