Maui's celebrity as a premiere visitor destination has grown as its reputation for good entertainment, fine art and headline events has spread. At the crux of the scene is the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (The MACC), a $32 million complex overlooking Kahului Harbor. The Center offers top-of-the-line entertainment and art exhibits.
Each year, an estimated 1,735 events are held at The MAAC. They cover the waterfront from community events, art exhibits, educational activities and church services to service club meetings, recitals, concerts, films and big name, live performances.
Wednesday films in the Castle Theater are a popular and ongoing feature. International and independent films, sponsored by the Maui Film Festival, are screened at 5 and 7:30 p.m. with light dinners, desserts and beverages available in the Candlelight Café.
The MACC's event calendar for January includes headliners like the Shanghai Circus, Barefoot Natives with Hawaii favorites Willie K and Eric Gilliom, The Temptations, and local ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro.
Built in 1994, the Center houses two theaters (the main theater seats 1,200), an outdoor amphitheater, art gallery, pa hula, gift shop, classrooms and meeting spaces. The Center is located in Kahului on Wahinepi'o Street between the Maui Community College Campus and Keopuolani Park.
