Kayak Maui's Coastlines

Ocean kayaking is a great way to slip away from the crowd and get lost in the rhythm of the paddle, the slush of the surf, and the irresistible tug of nature. If you need any more incentive, here it is—paddling is a good workout.

Open ocean paddling can be a strenuous challenge better left to the experienced, physically fit kayaker. But there are plenty of opportunities for paddlers with little or no experience to take a trip in Maui's waters. Kayak operators conduct easy to moderate tours through some of the island's most inviting seascapes in environments well known for abundance of marine life.

Tours depart from West Maui beaches, some designated only as mile markers, and move through marine reserves in the Kapalua/Ka'anapali area. On the south shore, there are trips originating at Kihei and Makena Landing that chart a course through turtle and dolphin territory and explore fascinating underwater wonderlands. Whale watch trips are scheduled during the winter season and sunset tours are available year-round.

Some operators offer half-day paddling tours that head along remote shorelines defined by sharp seacliffs and leading to stunning reefs. Snorkeling in beautiful places is also part of most kayak tour packages — and some offer SCUBA diving as well. In addition to the shorter, three to four hour paddles, many companies offer custom tours and more challenging long distance trips. Kayak rentals, for the solo paddler, also are available.
