Hit the Trails on Lanai

Although most people on Lanai may be hiking, golfing, swimming or beachcombing, mountain biking will deliver you to even more pristine spots. Rent a bike in Lanai City or at your resort, and thoroughly explore this, Hawaii's "Most Secluded Island."

Mostly coastal, Lana'i's bike trails look out over deep blue surf, old shipwrecks and quiet valleys. Check out these recommended routes:

• Keomuku Beach Road: This coastal ride over a dirt road is 12 miles each direction. Good for beginning to advanced riders. Take Keomuku Road (Road 460) from Lana'i City down to sea level; at the dirt road, go straight.

• Shipwreck Beach: A scenic coastal ride on a northeastern facing beach (use caution during the winter, high-surf months). Three miles round trip, beginner to advanced. Take Keomuku Road 430 until it dead-ends at a forked dirt road. Take the left fork to get to the trail.

• Mahana Trail: This six-mile (round trip) dirt road gains about 700 feet in elevation (starting at 1,000 feet at the trailhead). Good views of Moloka'i and West Maui. Drive 2.1 miles north of The Lodge at Ko'ele on Road 430; the trail entry is on your left through the gate.
