When out on Kauai's single-lane highways and backroads, you may want to keep the following in mind:

• All occupants of a car must wear seat belts (regardless of age), and children weighing less than 50 pounds must be in a child safety or booster seat.
• Right on red is legal unless otherwise marked.
• Avoid Lihu'e and the road between Lihu'e and Kapa'a during morning and afternoon rush hours (6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.)
• Start your sightseeing as early in the morning as possible, to avoid getting stuck behind tour buses on Kauai's one major thoroughfare (Kuhio Highway).
• Don't worry if you miss something the first time; most likely you'll go by it again. The road skirting Kauai's shore does not completely circle the island or cut across the length of it, so you'll be doing plenty of backtracking if you explore a hefty portion of the island.

Average Vehicle Rental Rates
• Cars: A one-week rental of a four-door compact car will cost between $189 and $273. Daily rentals range from $35 to $50.
• Motorcycles: Rent in partial-day increments for $69 to $139; 24 hours for $179 to $199; and three- to five-day rentals for $125 to $150 per day.
• Mopeds: A two-hour rental will cost approximately $20. Expect to pay about $29 for a six-hour rental, and $39 for eight hours.
• Bicycles: A full-day rental will cost between $10 and $25, depending on the type of bike you choose.
• Limousines & Taxis: Cab fare from Lihu'e Airport to Po'ipu will average $30, and Lihu'e to Princeville, about $40. From the Princeville Airport to Hanalei, the fare will average $12. Limousine service from the Lihu'e Airport to most resorts averages $209.
