Camping on Kauai

When the weather cooperates, Kauai can't be beat for camping opportunities. Your preparation is key to a happy experience and lasting memories.

Before heading into the great outdoors, here are a few things you need to know: It is illegal to camp anywhere but in designated campsites. You'll need a permit for all public camping areas that are either state or county owned. County permits are available at 4444 Rice Street, Suite 150, Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii 96766, phone 241-6670. State permits can be obtained by contacting the State Parks Division at 3060 Eiwa Street, State Building, Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii 96766, phone 274-3444.

The state charges a fee of $5 per family campsite per night at all parks except Na Pali Coast State Park where the fee is $10 per person per night. The county charges $3 per adult (over 18 years) per night for non-residents.

More than 20 public camping grounds are located on Kauai. They range from beachsides on the lush North Shore to desert-like camping at Polihale Beach and evergreen camping in the cool Koke'e Mountain tops. Campgrounds on the Na Pali Coast are accessible only by hiking or kayaking.

Always carry your own water when camping or hiking. You'll need a lightweight tent, preferably with a rainfly and a sewn-in waterproof floor. This will save you from various insects. Sleeping bags are a good idea, although you can get along at sea level with only a blanket. Down-filled bags are a necessity for high-altitude camping. A complete first-aid kit can mean the difference between life and death. If possible, don't hike or camp alone. Don't leave your valuables in your tent, and always carry your money, papers and camera with you.
