Primary recommendations:
Drink plenty of water every day. Hawaii's high humidity and heat will make you sweat, increasing your risk of dehydration. Do not make the mistake of foregoing water for soda, coffee or tea. The caffeine in these beverages will dehydrate you even more. Also, always carry a water bottle with you to the beach.
Carry your currency on you at all times preferably not in a purse. Many visitors carry fanny packs or backpacks.
Do not lock valuables in your car when you're out exploring. Any part of a car (even the trunk) can be broken into, and it's been known to happen here.
Rules of the road are similar to most everywhere else in the United States. For more details, see driving tips section of our Transportation Guide.
Unless you're with a guide, do not hike into remote areas. Especially do not hike in areas where it's raining heavily; flash floods and mud slides are common during heavy downpours.
Avoid driving or walking on remote and/or unpaved roads. These areas are less likely to be patrolled by the county police, increasing the risk of theft or vandalism.
