Unlike most helicopter tours which cut across the saddle of the island in order to get to the volcano, a fixed wing plane has enough fuel to cover all 266 miles of coastline, including the often ignored southern end of the island. Tour operators fly planes of various sizes, but all seats have a window, including the lucky person who gets to fly up front with the pilot. The planes fly almost as low as the helicopters, and do circle and fly back and forth so all passengers get to see the incredible view below.
In addition to their regular air tours, charter plane companies also offer additional services. For the visiting licensed pilot, try Island Hoppers or Mokulele Flight Service. With the guidance of their seasoned staffs, you can charter your own plane and design your own custom air tour. Big Island Air in Kona offers inter-island charters.
A tour of the Big Island via the air is highly recommended, especially if this is your first time visiting.
